Queensland Blue Pumpkin
Cucurbita maxima
This heirloom pumpkin originates from Queensland, Australia. Seeds were brought to the United States in the 1930s. I fell in love with this pumpkin in the late 90’s when I traveled in Australia. I never knew pumpkins could be blue or used as a vegetable and this pumpkin opened my eyes to heirloom plants. The fruit is deeply ribbed, with a distinct cupcake shape. The exterior colour is blue grey with a deep orange interior. Pumpkins range in size from 6-10lbs. Exceptional flesh for baking and culinary uses. Fruit tends to be somewhat dry which lends itself well to long storage time in cool conditions.
