German Chamomile
Matricaria recutita
This simple herb has been used for centuries across the globe. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans valued it for easing anxiety, reducing inflammation, and relieving fever. Today, it is best known for its calming effects and digestive benefits, most often dried and enjoyed as a soothing herbal tea. It can also be used topically in creams and salves to help calm skin rashes and irritations.
In the flower garden, its small, daisy-like blooms attract pollinators and blend beautifully with other focal flowers. These annual plants typically grow two to three feet tall and wide, weaving gracefully through nearby plantings. Chamomile readily reseeds itself from year to year without becoming invasive, making it an easy and rewarding addition to the garden.
