Four O'Clock
Mirabilis jalapa
Also called the Marvel of Peru, this heirloom flower was introduced to Europe from South America in the 1500s. Its blooms are delicately fragrant—pleasant without being overpowering—and typically open in the late afternoon, around four o’clock. On cloudy days, the flowers may remain open throughout the day. It is an excellent choice for night gardens or for planters placed on porches where they can be enjoyed in the evening.
Plants exhibit good drought tolerance and grow to about 3 feet tall. An overly enthusiastic perennial in warmer climates, but grown as annuals in our maritime climate.
