Blue Jay Green Bean
Phaseolus vulgaris
This heirloom bush bean was developed by Russ Crow, Illinois, in the 1970s from a cross involving Comtesse de Chambord, a 19th-century French heirloom variety. It was named Blue Jay for the striking coloration of its seeds, which resemble the blue jay’s feather pattern. When dried, the beans are a distinctive deep blue-black with beige speckles. Fresh pods are green, lightly streaked with purple.
Blue Jay is a tender, sweet variety that performs especially well in cooler climates and regions with shorter growing seasons. It is a generous producer in my garden with little effort.
Growing Information
3-6 days to germinate. 55 days to maturity.
To plant, soak seeds overnight and bury a half inch deep in soil once the weather has warmed. Plant in full sun. This bush bean requires no trellising and plants are quite sturdy so beans do not drag in the dirt.
